How about Eathyn Manumaleuna? (yes, I had to look up the spelling) Last game before his mission he wins the game against UCLA with the miraculous block. First game back off his mission, he wins the game by batting down Locker's last pass on fourth down. What a stud.

I can see why the coaches are having a tough time with the QB decision. But that second to last series they should have played Nelson. We needed his running to take some time off the clock. Heaps had great potential, but he looked like a freshman at times.

Way too many dropped passes, even if you account for the bullets from Heaps. But that should be fixable.

Awesome job by the defense to hold them scoreless in the second half.

Last year, I was in Stillwater, and people couldn't get away from the TV to watch BYU pull the upset. This year, OU-USU was on PPV, so no one saw it. I was following the game on my phone with another OSU fan after we left the shellacking that was OSU-Washington State, and it was like we were on an inside joke that no one knew about it. If OU-USU was on TV, people would've been lined up 10 deep around every TV at Eskimo Joe's.

I shot an 84 today at Davis Park. I struck the ball better than that, but two OB tee shots really put a dent in my score. I was even on all five of the par 3s, three of which were playing at 190 or longer. My best shot of the day came on a 210 yard par three, where I hit a draw to within 6 feet. I had complete control of my ball flight with my irons today, hitting fades and draws on command. I'm still fighting with my driver, unfortunately. The occasional good drive mixed in with a punch of pulls and uber fades.

Well P12X is complete. Just finished my second week. I love this program. I really like the arms and back and legs and back workouts. KempoX is fun. Not a big fan of YogaX. It's about 45 minutes too long for me. And some of those moves are still just impossible for me. I am down 4 pounds and starting to notice other changes in my body not reflected on the scale. I have been on a 2000 calorie diet and been doing really well with that. Now that FN Phat has my smith machine that I did pull ups on I have to find a power tower. I have a call in for one I found on Craigslist. Anybody have any recommendations for one?

I'm looking forward to the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Red Dawn" remakes. Ashamedly, I love(d) both movies.

Go Jed and the rest of the Wolverines! Red Dawn remake could be a lot better than the original, especially if Harry Dean Stanton has a role.

No one here cares about "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," so, uh, whatever.
Having a good point guard is a must when it comes to winning a championship. With coaches sometimes getting lost in translation during the course of a game, a good team needs someone to direct the show on the floor during the most difficult of times. Here at the office, we have been in heavy debate over over the past two days who the best point guard is to build a franchise around – right now. Many argue that lead guards like Chris Paul, Derrick Rose and Rajon Rondo are the best in the field for the position. However, Deron Williams is the ultimate franchise point guard.

When comparing Williams with Rose and Rondo, it seems he is not the level of athlete that the latter two guards are. However, he is more athletic than people give him credit for. He has dunked on Rose in the past, and when it comes to pushing the ball on the break, it is a tossup between the three as to who crosses the finish line first with the ball.

But the main factor that makes Williams a better pick than Rose and Rondo is his jump shot. The lack of a consistent jumper has hurt Rondo in the Finals as the Lakers just backed off and dared him to shoot. With Williams on the perimeter, you have to respect his jumper while still having to watch for his quick first step.

Often, one of the most forgotten attributes of a good point guard is intelligence. D-Will has spent his entire career studying under one of the greatest minds in the game in Jerry Sloan. And Sloan has had a close hand in William’s’ development. The fact that Williams has gained Sloan’s trust, proves that D-Will is battle-tested.

Picking Deron over CP3 is a tough call. When healthy, Chris Paul puts up eye-popping numbers and is an amazing individual stat machine. But what separates the two for me is wins. D-Will is a winner. He’s come out on top in so many more meaningful games in college and the pros that he is rarely rattled. The fact that he keeps his cool as the pressure rises give me the confidence to trust that he will lead my team to the promised land. For me, the ultimate franchise point guard is Deron Williams.

What do you think?

It takes virtually every scheme known in football (spread option, single-wing, zone blitz, wishbone, etc.) and breaks it down, talking extensively with those who pioneered it, or carried it to a new level. An absolute must read if you're a football fan, and if you're a BYU fan, even more so. Yes, Urban Meyer gets mention in the chapter on The Spread (not as much as Rich Rodriguez), but the BYU mentions in this book are significant. There's a chapter on BYU's all-out pass offense, with Hal Mumme and Mike Leach getting most of the focus.

A good chapter on the 3-3-5/4-2-5 with Joe Lee Dunn and Gary Patterson. JLD was at UNM in the 1980s, and there's a mention on how his defense had its moments vs. BYU.

Finally, the book all but gives credit to Virgil Carter as being the first true West Coast Offense QB, when he played for Bill Walsh in Cincinnati in the early 1970s.

Again, an outstanding read for the hardcore football fan.

As for the brawl game, I don't really have a problem with them throwing at Nyjer the first time. I don't have a problem with him stealing bases. Florida was the team up 9, not Washington. Nyjer's value is his speed. If you don't want him running, throw him out.

Frankly, I think anyone would've charged Volstad after he threw behind Morgan.

But that clothes line on Morgan was freaking awesome.

It's nice seeing passion from two teams that aren't even in the playoff hunt.

There was also the issue of him going after the catcher unnecessarily earlier in the game (or series?). And last Saturday he took out the Cards' catcher when he didn't need to. A lot of people have their eye on him.

And the Marlins aren't completely out of it either. The way they can run over the Braves could conceivably pull them back in the mix.

I'm saying that whether the version of what you shared actually happened or not doesn't really matter to me. I'm sure it's an approximation of the "truth" and that your version paints him as a true hero. His life was taken for no reason, so investing his death with heroism gives it purpose, which makes the task of mourning much easier. So, I don't want to know what really happened. Your version suffices, and I hope that it's the one told to his kids. If it's true, awesome. If it's not, awesome.

I'm being serious. As always, I take a page from my master when it comes to the framing of something for the better good. By all accounts, this bishop was a great man, so this isn't a perfect comparison, but hopefully, if you take the time to read this brief story, you'll see my larger point.
Theme of the Traitor and the Hero by JORGE LUIS BORGES

So the Platonic year
Whirls out new right and wrong,
Whirls in the old instead;
All men are dancers and their tread
Goes to the barbarous clangour of a gong.
W. B. Yeats: The Tower

Under the notable influence of Chesterton (contriver and embellisher of elegant mysteries) and the palace counselor Leibniz (inventor of the pre-established harmony), in my idle afternoons I have imagined this story plot which I shall perhaps write someday and which already justifies me somehow. Details, rectifications, adjustments are lacking; there are zones of the story not yet revealed to me; today, January 3rd, 1944, I seem to see it as follows:

The action takes place in an oppressed and tenacious country: Poland, Ireland, the Venetian Republic, some South American or Balkan state. . . Or rather it has taken place, since, though the narrator is contemporary, his story occurred towards the middle or the beginning of the nineteenth century. Let us say (for narrative convenience) Ireland; let us say in 1824. The narrator’s name is Ryan; he is the great-grandson of the young, the heroic, the beautiful, the assassinated Fergus Kilpatrick, whose grave was mysteriously violated, whose name illustrated the verses of Browning and Hugo, whose statue presides over a gray hill amid red marshes.

Kilpatrick was a conspirator, a secret and glorious captain of conspirators; like Moses, who from the land of Moab glimpsed but could not reach the promised land, Kilpatrick perished on the eve of the victorious revolt which he had premeditated and dreamt of. The first centenary of his death draws near; the circumstances of the crime are enigmatic; Ryan, engaged in writing a biography of the hero, discovers that the enigma exceeds the confines of a simple police investigation. Kilpatrick was murdered in a theater; the British police never found the killer; the historians maintain that this scarcely soils their good reputation, since it was probably the police themselves who had him killed. Other facets of the enigma disturb Ryan. They are of a cyclic nature: they seem to repeat or combine events of remote regions, of remote ages. For example, no one is unaware that the officers who examined the hero’s body found a sealed letter in which he was warned of the risk of attending the theater that evening; likewise Julius Caesar, on his way to the place where his friends’ daggers awaited him, received a note he never read, in which the treachery was declared along with the traitors’ names. Caesar’s wife, Calpurnia, saw in a dream the destruction of a tower decreed him by the Senate; false and anonymous rumors on the eve of Kilpatrick’s death publicized throughout the country that the circular tower of Kilgarvan had burned, which could be taken as a presage, for he had been born in Kilgarvan. These parallelisms (and others) between the story of Caesar and the story of an Irish conspirator lead Ryan to suppose the existence of a secret form of time, a pattern of repeated lines. He thinks of the decimal history conceived by Condorcet, of the morphologies proposed by Hegel, Spengler and Vico, of Hesiod’s men, who degenerate from gold to iron. He thinks of the transmigration of souls, a doctrine that lends horror to Celtic literature and that Caesar himself attributed to the British druids; he thinks that, before having been Fergus Kilpatrick, Fergus Kilpatrick was Julius Caesar. He is rescued from these circular labyrinths by a curious finding, a finding which then sinks him into other, more inextricable and heterogeneous labyrinths: certain words uttered by a beggar who spoke with Fergus Kilpatrick the day of his death were prefigured by Shakespeare in the tragedy Macbeth. That history should have copied history was already sufficiently astonishing; that history should copy literature was inconceivable. . . Ryan finds that, in 1814, James Alexander Nolan, the oldest of the hero’s companions, had translated the principal dramas of Shakespeare into Gaelic; among these was Julius Caesar. He also discovers in the archives the manuscript of an article by Nolan on the Swiss Festspiele: vast and errant theatrical representations which require thousands of actors and repeat historical episodes in the very cities and mountains where they took place. Another unpublished document reveals to him that, a few days before the end, Kilpatrick, presiding over the last meeting, had signed the order for the execution of a traitor whose name has been deleted from the records. This order does not accord with Kilpatrick’s merciful nature. Ryan investigates the matter (this investigation is one of the gaps in my plot) and manages to decipher the enigma.

Kilpatrick was killed in a theater, but the entire city was a theater as well, and the actors were legion, and the drama crowned by his death extended over many days and many nights.

This is what happened:

On the 2nd of August, 1824, the conspirators gathered. The country was ripe for revolt; something, however, always failed: there was a traitor in the group. Fergus Kilpatrick had charged James Nolan with the responsibility of discovering the traitor. Nolan carried out his assignment: he announced in the very midst of the meeting that the traitor was Kilpatrick himself. He demonstrated the truth of his accusation with irrefutable proof; the conspirators condemned their president to die. He signed his own sentence, but begged that his punishment not harm his country.

It was then that Nolan conceived his strange scheme. Ireland idolized Kilpatrick; the most tenuous suspicion of his infamy would have jeopardized the revolt; Nolan proposed a plan which made of the traitor’s execution an instrument for the country’s emancipation. He suggested that the condemned man die at the hands of an unknown assassin in deliberately dramatic circumstances which would remain engraved in the imagination of the people and would hasten the revolt. Kilpatrick swore he would take part in the scheme, which gave him the occasion to redeem himself and for which his death would provide the final flourish.

Nolan, urged on by time, was not able to invent all the circumstances of the multiple execution; he had to plagiarize another dramatist, the English enemy William Shakespeare. He repeated scenes from Macbeth, from Julius Caesar. The public and secret enactment comprised various days. The condemned man entered Dublin, discussed, acted, prayed, reproved, uttered words of pathos, and each of these gestures, to be reflected in his glory, had been pre-established by Nolan. Hundreds of actors collaborated with the protagonist; the role of some was complex; that of others momentary. The things they did and said endure in the history books, in the impassioned memory of Ireland. Kilpatrick, swept along by this minutely detailed destiny which both redeemed him and destroyed him, more than once enriched the text of his judge with improvised acts and words. Thus the populous drama unfolded in time, until on the 6th of August, 1824, in a theater box with funereal curtains prefiguring Lincoln’s, a long-desired bullet entered the breast of the traitor and hero, who, amid two effusions of sudden blood, was scarcely able to articulate a few foreseen words.

In Nolan’s work, the passages imitated from Shakespeare are the least dramatic; Ryan suspects that the author interpolated them so that in the future someone might hit upon the truth. He understands that he too forms part of Nolan’s plot. . . After a series of tenacious hesitations, he resolves to keep his discovery silent. He publishes a book dedicated to the hero’s glory; this too, perhaps, was foreseen.

Here's a decent blog from ESPN about it. And this is why I knew he'd get his appeal. For some reason I thought Masoli was kicked out of school too. But he was only dismissed from the team. And apparently he finished his undergrad degree.
BTW, isn't this the same thing allowed Kruger to transfer to UNLV and play right away and also Paulus to play football at Syracuse?

No the rule you are talking about is different. There used to be a rule that said if you got your degree within 4 years you could transfer without penalty for your last year of eligibility.

That is what Kruger used as well as former Ute Ryan Smith when he went to Florida.

Paulus used a rule that says you have 5 years of eligibility in the NCAA. He used up his 4 years at Duke but never redshirted, therefore he had 1 year of eligibility left and was allowed to transfer to Syracuse to play.

I thought the utes played poorly, but looked like a team that could be very good this year. Wynn should be solid, the receivers are athletic, the running game is very impressive and the defense should be typically stout.

That said, Pitt is not the 15th best team in the country and I might hesitate to put them in the top 35 (they have a running back, and a pretty good defensive line and that's about it). As good as the utes are/could be, this game - due to how poorly they played (mostly second half) and the fairly weak opponent at home - was not a very good test in terms of determining where the utes are at this year.
